Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time<\/span><\/p>\n

20 June 2021<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Let us go across to the other side\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Let us go across to the other side\u2019 is an important phrase in Mark\u2019s Gospel which occurs many times. Jesus and the disciples are crossing the Sea of Galilee from what is a predominantly Jewish area to a more Gentile (non-Jewish) region. While this phrase signifies Jesus\u2019 geographical position, it also suggests that he is inviting the disciples to go a little deeper on their journey. They are perhaps entering into the unknown, moving out of their comfort zones and therefore feeling anxious. The crossing of the water does not go so well for the disciples as a storm begins to brew and eventually the water begins to endanger the boat. To the disciple\u2019s astonishment, Jesus is asleep through the whole ordeal. Their anxious call is understandable, \u2018Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?\u2019 After all, Jesus has led them, and \u2018other boats\u2019 into this situation and now appears not to care what will happen to them all.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In times of turmoil in life, we too may feel totally abandoned, swamped by fear and anxiety, adrift in a storm where even Jesus appears to be asleep. During such experiences, we might remember the words of Jesus from today\u2019s Gospel and repeat them, like a mantra, \u2018Peace! Be Still\u2019. While the wind is howling around us it can be frightening but Christ is always with us, present within our very selves, offering us this deep peace. Often, coming back into this awareness can help us navigate through the storm and remind us that Jesus is very active in our lives, especially when we are entering into unknown territory. What is required of the disciples in this account, is a more mature faith, a deeper trust in their Teacher, that he will not abandon them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018May the peace of Christ go with you wherever he may send you; May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm; May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you; May he bring you home rejoicing.\u2019 (Shane Claiborne).<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

DOWN AND CONNOR KNOCK VIRTUAL PILGRIMAGE –<\/span> We welcome you to join us for our Diocesan Knock Virtual Pilgrimage today Sunday 13th June 2021. The ceremonies will be streamed live on the shrine website www.knockshrine.ie and on Knock Shrine Facebook page. The programme will commence with Rosary at 2.30pm and Mass will be celebrated at 3pm by Fr. Richard Gibbons, Rector of the Shrine. Bishop Treanor will give a short message of welcome to the people of our Diocese by means of a video, which will be shown at 2.55pm. You are invited to place a petition by visiting the Knock Shrine Website and all the petitions will be before the Altar during the Mass. You may also request that a candle be lit for your intentions. We encourage as many of you as possible to participate and pray that next year we may gather, as a Diocese, in person again at our National Shrine of Our Lady of Knock. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lough Derg 2021<\/span> It will not be possible in 2021 to reopen Station Island for the Traditional Three Day Pilgrimage or even for the autumn programme of Day Retreats. The outdoor Pilgrimage on the Lough Shore Pilgrim Path will also be available as the summer goes on.
