ST. AGNES, VIRGIN AND MARTYR<\/strong><\/span> Feast Day was\u00a0 21st January. St. Agnes, wealthy and beautiful, was martyred for her virginity, in the last persecutions in Rome, in the early 4th Century. St. Agnes is patron of bethrothed couples, gardeners and young girls. <\/span><\/p>\n

SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD \u2013 24 JANUARY In 2019,<\/span><\/strong> Pope Francis declared that the third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be observed as a special day devoted to \u201cthe celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

4 CORNERS FESTIVAL BELFAST (31 Jan \u2013 7 Feb)<\/strong><\/span> Because of the pandemic, it is a purely on-line project with all events being available in the comfort of your home via \u201clive\u201d video streaming services such as Facebook and YouTube. The theme is Breathe\u2026 The Hebrew word Ruach means \u2018breath\u2019 or \u2018spirit\u2019 \u2013 the source of life, and the festival aims to breathe hope and creativity into Belfast and further afield at a very difficult time. The keynote speaker is Prof John Paul Lederach, the internationally renowned author and conflict transformation expert from the University of Notre Dame in the United States. Morning and Night Prayer will be streamed throughout the festival. Night Prayer will be led by Jim Deeds, a pastoral worker in Down and Connor and his colleague, Paula McKeown, Director of the Diocesan Living Church Office, will facilitate a workshop on resilience. There will be discussions on topics such as domestic abuse and racism and one of the moderators will be Seamus McKee. www.4cornersfestival.com.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now is the time<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 50 years ago, in his famous \u2018I have a dream\u2019 speech, Martin Luther King Jr talked about \u2018the fierce urgency of now\u2019. He urged people to take positive action and to march forward together to address inequality and injustice, and his energy and conviction brought about massive change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That sense of \u2018fierce urgency\u2019 seems to grab Jesus and the disciples in today\u2019s Gospel. In the opening chapters of Mark\u2019s Gospel everything happens \u2018at once\u2019 or immediately. There is a sense of hurry; the time has come, the kingdom of God is near, and Jesus needs helpers to work alongside him. Simon, Andrew, James and John are certainly ready, so ready that they are prepared to leave behind their livelihoods, and even their families, to attend to the urgent business of spreading the Good News.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus asks the same of us, his modern-day disciples: \u2018Follow me\u2019. We are summoned too. We are challenged to set aside our worldly concerns, to see the world in a new way, and to begin a new adventure with Jesus. For every person in our world who is suffering or oppressed or in need, there is a \u2018fierce urgency of now\u2019. The work of the kingdom is too immediate to wait.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilising drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God\u2019s children\u2026 The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
