Creating Pastoral Communities

As we look towards the future in our diocese we have learned quite a bit from the experience of other dioceses in Ireland and around the world. They have learned that successful communities are focussed on mission, have good working relationships between clergy and laity and a substantial population. They should reflect existing community networks and, in rural areas, they should be gathered around a central hub. You are invited to read the Consultation Document available on the Diocesan Website perhaps paying particular attention to our proposed Pastoral Community. www.downandconnor.org.

I want to draw your attention again to the Consultation Document on Creating Pastoral Communities which is on the Diocesan Website. The purpose of the exercise is to help us plan for the future in a way that combines enthusiasm for the church’s mission, an increased recognition of the responsibility of everyone and realism about the number of priests who will be available to us in the next few decades. The first phase  of the process is to identify the boundaries of the proposed Pastoral Communities.

I encourage you to read the Consultation Document and respond to it. As well as that I ask everybody to pray for a renewed spirit of co-responsibility in which lay people feel called and affirmed in playing their full part in the work of spreading the Gospel. At the same time, as we are looking towards the future of the Church we need to pray that young people will be inspired to serve the church in the priesthood and the religious life.
